South Africa

| Established in January 2009, BioRegional South Africa is based in Durban in the KwaZulu Natal province.
In addition to working with partners Tongaat Hulett Developers on a One Planet Action Plan for the Sibaya precinct, BioRegional SA conducts workshops and training on the One Planet Living framework and its implications for sustainable urban development in the South African context. As a result we have been selected by a number of organisations to work with their teams and stakeholders to develop overarching sustainability strategies using the 10 One Planet and provide technical consultancy. Building local capacity is a key to South Africa’s long-term success and BioRegional SA are working in partnership with the New Economics Foundation (nef), with funding from the local eThekwini municipality, on a 3 year programme to champion the One Planet principle of Equity and Local Economic Development in the Waterloo Township. The Waterloo Entrepreneurial Development Programme (WEDP) started in June 2009 and involves the delivery of unique economic literacy tools to the community, businesses, voluntary sector organisations and government departments by a local Enterprise Coach. These tools help individuals set up successful, sustainable enterprises, with the support of micro-financing organisations Opportunity Finance and WDB, and help Waterloo to understand its local economy and the actions that can be taken to increase the re-spending of resources in the area. There are already over 100 business start-up and expansion clients benefiting from the programme with plenty of time left to expand! In 2010 our aim is to continuing working with our existing partners and to build demonstration homes in Durban which illustrate how sustainable lifestyles can be easy, affordable and aspirational across the socio-economic bands. |
