Barangaroo, Australia
A community applying the One Planet principles |
Barangaroo is an extraordinary 22ha site in the heart of Sydney, the development of which is split into three stages:
- Barangaroo South: a commercial and residential centre at the south end of the site;
- The Headland Park: a park on the northern headland
- Barangaroo Central: a low rise cultural parkland that links the Park and commercial districts together
BioRegional is working with both Lend Lease, the developer of Barangaroo South, and the land owner, Barangaroo Delivery Authority (BDA), who are developing the Headland Park and will be tendering for Barangaroo Central.
Barangaroo South, Lend Lease
Lend Lease and BioRegional have established a One Planet Action Plan that includes targets such as:
- A zero carbon site
- 75% reduction in energy demand compared to business as usual
- 20% reduction in embodied energy
- A water positive site
- 87% diversion from landfill of operational waste, with a 100% reduction in greenhouse gases
- A 4% car use modal split.
Lend Lease has recently received Ministerial approval for its amended design for Barangaroo South, including some 330,000m2 of commercial space and 800 residential units, 33,000 m2 of retail and a hotel. We have received planning approval for the first commercial tower, the application for the second tower is expected to be lodged in the coming months or so. Enabling work started onsite in 2011.

Barangaroo Headland Park, Barangaroo Delivery Authority
The 6 hectare Headland Park which will include a 75,000m3 cultural space will also be zero carbon and water neutral.
The design is also setting biodiversity at its heart with 100% native plant use (including lawns), 90% of which will be endemic species (excluding lawns). New habitat will be created in the landscape, sea walls and also in buildings through the use of green roofs.
