One Planet Action Plans

In order to become a One Planet Community a development must have an overarching sustainability strategy, addressing the 10 One Planet principles, approved by the project review board. We call this strategy a One Planet Action Plan.

One Planet Action Plans are developed collaboratively by the developer and their design team, BioRegional and the relevant stakeholders. They look at the particular challenges faced in the local context, set performance targets and lay out the actions that need to be taken to make one planet living affordable, attractive and achievable there.

The resulting document can perform a number of functions including:

  • creating a vision for the sustainability of the project from design and masterplanning through to long term estate management
  • aligning the design team, development partners, local municipality and future residents and tenants
  • identifying the key strategies that need to be employed to make it easy to create a development where people can lead high quality but sustainable lifestyles
  • listing opportunities for creating business opportunities to supply the community with green products and services
  • enabling the community to become part of an international initiative to create a global network of sustainable communities
  • informing a communications and marketing strategy

In addition to setting context specific sustainability targets, every One Planet Community adopts a set of Common International Targets. Wherever possible these are augmented by independently certifiable international and national industry standards, for example LEED certification for buildings, Forest Stewardship Council Certification for wood products and Fairtrade.
