Every One Planet Community must have an approved One Planet Action Plan

An overarching sustainability strategy

The programme uses the 10 One Planet principles to create an overarching, sustainability strategy for a development, resulting in a One Planet Action Plan.

This Action Plan then provides a point of reference for the lifetime of the project and, with the support of our regional office staff, our partners work to implement the Action Plan during the design, construction and long term management of a development.

In practice this means not only do we look at the “hard ware” of sustainability –energy efficient buildings and green construction material supply chains – we look at estates management and community engagement, governance and education.

A flexible, context specific approach

Understanding the local context, and the specific sustainability challenges and opportunities this provides for a project is crucial for developing appropriate and effective solutions.

One Planet Communities is as much about the process of co-creating the future and learning in the process, as about achieving standard targets. But, to ensure progress towards the shared vision, we use flexible but universally applied Common International Targets.

Membership

Membership of the network is recognition of the commitment made by our partner developers to the aim and vision of the One Planet Communities programme. It is granted following a review of a project’s One Planet Action Plan and maintained by undertaking an annual review of progress and learning.
